Company Background

Zurn Corporation originally manufactured a patented backwater valve. Today it manufactures and distributes one of the largest plumbing products packages in the world. Zurn’s products include; Specification Drainage Operation, AquaFlush flush valves, AquaSense sensor-operated plumbing products, AquaSpec commercial faucets, Wilkins, Zurn Light Commercial, Flo-Thru, the Chemical Drainage Systems, Zurn PEX Plumbing Systems and Zurn Radiant Heat. This wide variety of products includes manufacturing, assembly, distribution and service of plumbing products and accessories.

Situation

Having eleven different business operations, Zurn found itself with several websites on different servers and sometimes at different locations. Technology change, customer demand and the nature of Zurn’s product line required several different ways to update pages, from Microsoft Frontpage to Notepad. In doing so, many of the product sheets were outdated until the webmaster began storing data in Microsoft Access databases. After a few months the Access databases began to grow in addition to new technology changes.

Solution

Distributed Network Software (DNS) installed and configured Microsoft SQL Server as a solution to Zurn’s many websites and databases. Product information from Access databases was migrated to databases in SQL Server. A single web portal was created for the eleven different business operations giving Zurn customers the unified approach to all operations. In addition, DNS created an administrative site for webmasters to manage and update their operational pages.

The web portal, located at www.zurn.com, was created with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET tools and SQL Server database. It allows customers to search for and download product information on many different configurations of plumbing products including, fixtures, faucets, drains, p-traps, supply-lines, trap wrap and other necessary plumbing items. Zurn.com web portal, along with the product configurator web app, tubular brass site and flo-thru web calculator are all built on Microsoft products and hosted in the commercial hosting facility at DNS. DNS environmentally controlled hosting facility is supported by an 85KW generator, intrusion monitoring as well as three-layer fire, access-control and burglar protection.
